System: FC6 x86_64 with 32bit TB version 2.0.0.4 (20070604)
I set up EE to call 'gvim'
VIM starts fine but after using 'ZZ' to exit the edited text, the compose windo is unchanged from before gvim started....
Second question: is there any way to make the external editor be used by default?

I get the same behavior in OS X. Compose message in gvim, exit gvim but nothing appears in the composition window. This is latest Thunderbird (downloaded today).
I would also like to know if the external editor can be used by default.

Still present. Using FC7 i386.
thunderbird-2.0.0.6-5.fc8 vim-X11-7.0.235-1.fc7
This seems to be specific to gvim, as gedit works fine.
