Installed but failed to get it working in Thunderbird 184.108.40.206

I have installed External Editor 0.7.3 (my first try) in the latest Thunderbird 220.127.116.11. Installation went ok, the "Edit in External Editor Ctrl-E" menu option appeared as expected.
But things won't work if I select this menu option. I tried several times, while composing a new email, with the following "Text Editor" commands in the External Editor Settings dialog: - <empty> --> Error message telling me I need to specify an editor - gvim.exe (I have it in my path) --> nothing happens - "c:\Program Files\Vim\vim71\gvim.exe" (picked by browsing to it) --> nothing happens - notepad.exe -> nothing happens Except when the editor path is empty, it's as if Ctrl-E is was a "no-op".
Any idea of what could be causing the problem that I see?
Thank you very much for an extension that seems to do exactly what I want... --Ivan

it seems to be installed properly. I have no idea why it doesn't start your editor.

So, the problem was indeed that I had not installed the "External Editor" icon in the toolbar (it was not obvious to me that this was mandatory to be able to use the automatically-inserted menu item). Maybe testing for this case and picking a default editing mode would make sense... anyway.
Thank you, globs, for your support and indications !
