external editor problems on OS-X Leopard |

Are there known problems with External Editor on OS-X 10.5 (Leopard)? It seemed to work fine for me under 10.4, but with Leopard it often(maybe 10% of the time) hangs Thunderbird. When I exit from the editor(vim on an X11 window), the Thunderbird compose window stays blank, andany attempt to close it gives me a \"Close your external editor first\"message. At that point I have to kill Thunderbird and start over. Fortunately,I can usually find my composed message still in /tmp.I\'m running OS-X 10.5.4 (it happens on both an Intel laptop and a G5 desktop).Thunderbird 2.0.0.16, External Editor 0.7.4, editor command \"/usr/x11/bin/xterm -e vim\". |

Hi,
This should hopefully be fixed with EE 0.8 (for Thunderbird 3 only). |

Is there a short-term fix for those of us still on Tbird 2? I'm finding this behavior with emacs as the external editor and, worse, I'm finding that EE wipes out the /tmp buffer on exit from the emacsclient, so that this doesn't just hang Tbird, it loses my work.... |

No, I'm sorry about that, but the fix requires the TB 3 new thread API. The bug is probably a side effect of the workaround I came to due to the poor old API. |

Hello,
I am having the exactly the same problem since quite a while now (~1 year). Due to this problem (and your response above), I successively updated to Thunderbird 3.0 and recently to TB 3.1. / EE 0.9 but the problem persisted. Here is a summary:
After starting TB and happily editing about 5-10 emails with EE, the TB window stays blank when returning from the external editor.
What I have to do is: Open a new message and call the external editor from there. At the moment the external editor starts with the new message, the TB window of the old message is refreshed and I can go on working on the old message, while the TB window of the new message now stays blank when trying to return from the external editor. This goes on until I restart TB.
Any ideas? I love the EE extension and use it very often, but this problem makes it quite awkward to deal with...
My system: TB 3.1. EE 0.9.0 Mac OSX 10.5.8 As external editor I use XEmacs 21.4.20 in X11 (XQuartz 2.1.6); XEmacs is called by a special shell-script...
Thank you Volker |
