My camera also makes small movies, and iPhoto happily import them. Unfortunately they do not show up, nor do they become downloadable. Is this difficult to add.

Yes.
To display a picture, I generate a small thumbnail. In the slideshow mode, a larger one.

But I can't extract an image to display the video, and I don't want to embed the entire video in a player object.

What could be done would be to just display a quicktime icon. They video could then be selected for download, but would not be displayed.

Generating a small icon would be better than nothing. Another option is to generate separate pages fpor the movies and the images?

After a little searching, I might do something cool with a flash player.
No promise, but I'll have a deeper look tomorrow...

Finally, that wasn't that easy: Flash players only display flv videos, and encoding avi or mpeg videos to flv on the fly is not really possible.

I'll see what I can do...

Apparently iPhoto itself keeps a small thumbnail somewhere. I am not a big expert in this, but maybe you can find something in the thumbnails?

Yes, that's also what I found.
But I wished I could also stream the movie.

Wouldn't be firing up up a new browser window with a URL pointing to the movie be enough. Then the plugins of the browser will take care of things.

That's what I began looking at.
But it has to integrate nicely in the system (i.e. movies are not shown in the slideshow, are excluded from the rss photocast feeds and so on). There are some work to be done before I can say it works fine.
