It is not clear to me what means:
"editor must not return before you close the file"
In clear, is PsPad compatible or not ? ( www.pspad.com )
I can open and modify a mail, but not save it modified in Thunderbird.
Any clue ?

Hi,
it means:
When you call it from the command line, by typing something like
pspad.com file.txt
you must not be able to do anything else in the terminal before you have quit pspad.
As I don't know this editor and don't even have Windows, I can't tell you about it. Test it from the command line, read the doc to find out if there is an option to force him to follow this behaviour (look for words such as foreground, background, nofork, ...)

Didn't find anything related to this, and it remains obscur to me.
I don't know how to edit a mail from Tunderbird by command line.
I did not read it had never been tested with windows.
May be good to me mentionned somewhere.
Thanks.

Hey, I did not say that.
I said: first test launching pspad form the command line to see how it behaves. Not speaking about mail at all here.
Then, if it behaves as required by External Editor, try to use it to edit your mail.
External editor has been tested on windows with some editors, beginning with Notepad, and gvim or emacs (I can't remember).

"first test launching pspad form the command line to see how it behaves. Then, if it behaves as required by External Editor,.."
???
"try to use it to edit your mail." => Done (see 1st post). Does not work.
Will look for alternatives.
Thank you.

I forgot to say: "pspad.com file.txt" normally opens the file as all editors I have been using.
May be you should test with other editors than "gvim or emacs " because I am not sure at all they are widely used on windows environement.
